"Dancing Around the Tree of Life"
Artist: Amber Zimmerman The Tree of Life is a common theme in many cultures worldwide. In our valley, the Tree of Life could be an Apple Tree. It provides food, income, and is part of the history of our community. I painted this version of a Tree of Life in the inside of the bowl, and people dancing around the tree in celebration on the outside. My art has always included symbolic and environmental themes. I work in mixed media, painting, drawing, sculpture and glass art. I have a B.A. in Environmental Art & Sculpture. Contact info: azintrees@yahoo.com |

Communication 2
Artist: Joanna Sparks "As nature from the cosmic to the infinitesimal creates and recreates, so I personify this creation in the mindfulness, delight and wonder of the nature spirits--the mystical faerie kindgoms of folklore." Joanna is a sculptor, potter and painter who lived, worked and taught her media in Europe for 14 years. |

Siberian Iris
Artist: Gretchen Rohde "Winter is a tough time for a landscape painter like myself who prefers to work outside. Rather than give up on making art, I switch to reductive relief prints during the cold months. This winter I've started a series of Non-native botanical prints, including this Siberian Iris. My Empty Bowl this year is a design derived from that Iris print." Gretchen Rohde is a plein air landscape painter whose work is strongly connected to her interest in the environment and conservation efforts in the Wenatchee River Watershed. She is also a professional graphic designer and has volunteered for numerous efforts in support of the arts in Chelan County since 1995. Before moving to Lake Wenatchee, Gretchen worked as an art director in advertising business in Seattle. Contact info: www.thedesignranch.com |

Bird Migration
Artist: Heather A. Wallis Murphy This serving bowl shows three Leavenworth area birds migrating back from the tropics of Central and South America. These three birds were chosen for their pimary color feathers, representing the connection to their brilliant winter range habitats. Red is the Rufous Hummingbird. With its nectar flowers, it is returning from southern Mexico. Yellow is the Yellow Warbler. With its riparian willow vegitation, it is returning from as far south as the Amazon. Blue is the Barn Swallow, cruising up from as far away as Argentina. I am a wildlife Biologist, Artist and Nature Journalist. With the love of wildlife biology and art, my paintings usually include natural history notes. Thank you for this opportunity to support the Community Cupboard! Lopez
Artist: Melissa (Bale) Madsen I was privileged to paint my 2010 bowl among friends on Lopez Island, WA. I was encouraged by their community and creative ideas. My inspiration comes from the waves and water of the San Juan's. I came back to Leavenworth with a renewed appreciation of our areas natural beauty and community spirit. Born and raised in Montana, I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cornish Institute of Art, Seattle. I also studied at the Portland School of Art in Portland, Maine, the University of Montana, and the Archie Bray Foundation, an international mecca for ceramic artists. For eleven years I painted for Nordstrom's children's department. My work hung in over 40 stores throughout the United States. I have completed commissions for the Washington State Arts Commission and numerous private clients. I am currently working on drawings and collages for a May show at Anchor Space Gallery in Anacortes, WA. Contact info: Alpenice1@nwi.net |

The Werner Janssen Bowl for 2010
Artist: Dan McConnell I started doing Empty Bowls with the Rob Newsom bowl back in the mid 1990's. I combined Rob with Alfred E. Neuman, and came up with Alfred E. "Newsom". This year my bowl is a caricature of Werner Janssen, who does an opinion piece once a week on KOHO Radio, entitled "Consider This", where he expresses "one person's opinion". Werner and I have been friends for about ten years, in spite of the fact that I've done several caricatures of him for local political cartoons in the Wenatchee World and our local weekly papers. He has actually purchased some of the original cartoons from me, which is the ultimate expression of art appreciation! Spiral Dragon Bowl
Artist: Cordi Bradburn ...So I went to my cabinet to find all my glazes dry and old, but I had a pencil that would fire hot enough to use. So, I decided to draw on my bowl. I love drawing with pencil, all the shading and textures, and what could be more textural than a dragon? My dragon is a spiral, which signifies infinity and moving deeper into something. Dragons represent magic and strength so this is a magic bowl, representing strong movement into the depth of changes in the Infinite. I just made that up-and that's what I like about being an artist! The Dunford Barn
Artist: Lori Aylesworth The Dunford Barn is a well known landmark in Central Washington, located off Highway 97, just a mile or so past the turnoff heading towards Ellensburg. The barn is one of the few old barns left still standing around the countryside. If the roofs are not maintained, the elements take over and eventually these beautiful buildings succumb and fall down. Lori has a special fondness for barns, having grown up on a farm with a huge oak barn built by her grandfather. Lori is a full-time visual artist. Her mediums include pastel, oil, and watercolor. She covers a broad range of subject matter, including landscapes, marine art, wildlife and nature (birds, especially!), and pet portraits. Commissions welcome! Her work can be seen at The Leavenworth Tasting Room on the East end of Front Street, and also at Village Art in the Park in Leavenworth. She also travels with her art to many various art shows around the Pacific Northwest. Contact info: www.AylesworthArt.com |
