New charitable gifts tax deduction for 2026 tax year

Starting with tax year 2026, you may be able to deduct charitable contributions even if you don't itemize your taxes. If you do not take the standard deduction, you may be able to deduct up to $1,000 (or $2,000 if filing jointly) in cash contributions to qualified organizations like Upper Valley MEND.

A few things to note: different rules apply to households who itemize their taxes, and this deduction does not apply to those who give through donor advised funds or other third parties. (Please consult your own tax expert to help you navigate the changes.)

But it does create one more tool for many people looking to make a difference in 2026. Click here to learn more about ways to give — from recurring gifts, gifts through your IRA, and more.
